Dev Diary #2: Magic equipment and a small taste of the treasure

Hello, adventurers!

In our second developer diary, we're taking a look at equipment in Curse of the Ancient Grimoire. This isn't an announcement of new content: it's a closer look at items and systems already in the game.

We'll reveal a few names and effects, but not where to find the items, which quests reward them, or their story connections.

What can your hero equip?

Equipment slots cover a main weapon, an off-hand weapon, armor, a shield, two rings, an amulet, boots, and gloves. This is a list of slots, not a promise that every weapon and shield combination can be used simultaneously.

The choices extend beyond your weapon. There's only one amulet slot: will you favor exploration or strengthen other abilities? Two ring slots offer more room to complement your equipment.

Offense, protection, or exploration?

For this overview, we'll group items by purpose. These aren't separate in-game categories or rarity tiers.

  • Offense: more accurate attacks, higher damage, or an additional damage type.
  • Protection: higher AC and bonuses to saving throws.
  • Exploration: help with skills such as Perception, Survival, or History.

Six items to whet your appetite

Ring of Protection +1 +1 AC and +1 to all saving throws. An understated piece of jewelry reminding us that useful magical equipment doesn't always need a blade.

Amulet of Nature +2 Survival and +2 Perception. For a hero who wants a better chance of noticing something important and handling the wilderness. A bonus helps the roll; it doesn't guarantee success.

Master Thief Boots +2 Athletics, +2 Stealth, and +1 to all saving throws. They combine help with movement and a quiet approach with extra protection.

Amulet of the Sage +2 Intelligence, +2 Wisdom, and +2 History. A different direction from the Amulet of Nature — and both compete for the same slot.

Gauntlets of Giant Strength A glimpse of more powerful equipment: +4 Strength. That's an increase to the ability score, not a direct +4 bonus to every attack or damage roll.

Great Hammer of Storms A +2 magical two-handed weapon that adds 1d8 lightning damage and +2 Wisdom. Its effects go beyond the basic blow. Even lightning isn't an answer to everything, though: an opponent's immunities still matter.

More than bigger numbers

What makes equipment interesting is the connection between combat and the adventure beyond it. A ring can strengthen defenses, boots can support skills, and an amulet can enhance abilities useful during exploration. Choosing gear means looking beyond weapon damage and considering where you want to support your hero.

This was only a small taste. Where you'll encounter these items, and what else you'll discover, is part of your adventure.

What do you prioritize: a stronger weapon, better protection, or equipment for exploration? Let us know in the comments!
