Patch Notes | v1.1.0

Steam Workshop

We are happy to announce that the Steam Workshop is open! Publish your patterns straight from the export window. A few things you should know:

  • Every pattern you publish starts out private. When you are ready to share it, open your item in the Workshop and choose "Change Visibility" -> "Public"
  • The preview is generated automatically to fit Steam's 1 MB limit. If you are not happy with it, you can export a video as well and add it to the item page
  • Given the recent news about the Workshop being used to spread malware, patterns in our Workshop are not shaders or code, only a set of parameters that Kaleidos checks before loading. Nothing you subscribe to can run on your machine
  • Once your pattern is published, you can update it the same way: share it again and the same item is updated
  • When you subscribe to a pattern, it is added to your gallery right away with a "" prefix, no restart needed. Subscribing again creates a new copy
  • If you don't see the Workshop for Kaleidos, please restart Steam client

We can't wait to see and try your creations, so if you have something to share, please do!

GameMaker

A new target for every pattern, REACTION included. A GLSL ES shader pair and a GML script that draws the pattern into any rectangle - a room, the GUI, a surface - or fills a sprite, using its alpha as the mask. Hover and clicks come with it

By default it is one .yymps file: in GameMaker, "Tools" -> "Import Local Package". You can also export separate files for more flexibility

Other new changes

  • REACTION exports to every engine - until now a reaction-diffusion pattern could only leave as an image, a video, a Shadertoy or a web wallpaper. Now Godot, Unity, LOVE2D and GameMaker join the list. Have fun!
  • A Unity skybox for every pattern - Perlin and Cellular as well as REACTION, in Built-in and URP, with the same DOME / PANORAMA choice as the Godot sky
  • Sprite sheets and frame sequences - IMAGE now has STILL / SHEET / SEQUENCE:
  • STILL is the image export from previous versions
  • SHEET is the animation as one PNG, every frame a cell of an even grid
  • SEQUENCE is numbered PNGs in a folder of their own

[/*][*]

Five rows of swatches - now 25 instead of 20

[/*][*]

Import palettes from files - the folder icon above the swatches opens your system's own file window: .gpl, .hex, .txt (Lospec), .pal and .png strips or grids

[/*][*]

Dark theme - just try it out!

[/*][*]

New loading screen - the KALEIDOS logo fills in pixel by pixel while Kaleidos prepares everything it needs. This should help those of you who got a black screen or a "Not Responding" window on start

[/*][*]

Search is now case-insensitive for Cyrillic and accented letters too

Fixes

  • Cellular patterns did not export to Godot at all - now they do
  • If something does go wrong, there is now something to read - crash.log beside your patterns records any error with its full trace, and boot.log a timed line for every step of the start. We should have done this from the beginning
  • A shader your driver refuses no longer takes the app down - the pattern draws black and the reason goes to crash.log. The rest of Kaleidos carries on
  • The Master Gallery froze on first opening - its patterns are now prepared behind the loading screen
  • The Recent Colors row sat unevenly under its label

With this update we consider Kaleidos feature-complete. It started as an internal tool for making our own game, and Emerald Ferns is still our first priority, so that is where our focus goes now

This is not the end of Kaleidos: we will keep fixing bugs, improving performance and polishing. New features are unlikely, with the possible exception of Unreal Engine support and, maybe, a new pattern type

Back to Emerald Ferns - you'll hear from us soon! Thank you all for your support
