Subspace: Redux — The Scrapbook Update

Every MMO ends up with a drawer of things worth nothing. The mug from a wrecked galley, the novelty sock, the orange-named sword that turns out to be a letter opener. Nobody designed that drawer and everybody has one, because a world you can pick things up in eventually fills with things not worth picking up — and those turn out to be the ones people show each other.
So we built the drawer on purpose. Eight hundred and fifty-five items, none of which do anything.
📖 The Scrapbook
A collection of everything you have ever held, opened from the button beside the chat box.
- It remembers real gear too. Anything that passes through your hold is recorded, so the Scrapbook is a log of your whole career, not only the joke half of it.
- **Junk is filed, and filing destroys it.** That is the trade: the card is gone, the entry is permanent. A second copy is refused — keep it to trade or auction instead.
- Search it, click an entry, and it lands in your chat box. The window stays open, because a sentence is several cards and reopening for each word is most of the work of saying anything.
- Collected is forever. You can link something you no longer carry, the same way an appearance library works. There is nothing else you can do with an entry, so there is nothing to abuse.
🃏 Pawn & Protocol
A kiosk on the Trade Depot Vendor, selling Comms Protocol cards at one credit each.
Each card is one word. The point is the sentence. , , — type the words in brackets and, if you own the cards, they come out as real item links in the colour of the thing they are.
Three hundred and sixty-five words are in stock. Search the tab rather than scrolling; nobody can find Shorts in a wall of three hundred cards.
🗃️ The other four hundred and ninety
Not sold anywhere. They turn up in wrecks, lockers, mail rooms and bunks, on a small roll that runs after a real drop has resolved — a junk item has never cost you a rare one and never will.
Cockpit clutter. Engineering excuses. Galley crimes. Legal notices nobody read. Forty FakeLegendary items with orange names, zero stats and their own 0.10% roll, because the joke only works if it is rare enough to believe for a second.
/use on any of them plays its emote and does nothing else. No cooldown, no interrupt, no effect. That restraint is the item.
🔗 Shift-click anything
Chat learned to carry links, the way an MMO's does — and the whole game learned to put things in it.
Shift-click to link works from your cargo hold, the vault, a vendor, the Auction House, the Trade Depot, your Ship Inspector's fitted slots, the Weapon Systems drawer, your quest journal and the Mission Center. If you can see the thing, you can put it in a sentence.
- Items come out in their rarity's colour with the full tooltip on hover — the same one the cargo window shows, so a linked item reads exactly like one in your hold.
- Pilots link too. Click to whisper, shift-click for their sheet, right-click for the rest.
- Quests, contracts and achievements carry their own tooltips.
- Web addresses are found automatically and always read as exactly where they go. Clicking one asks first; it never opens anything on its own.
A link is proof, not decoration: the server grants one only for something you actually have — or have collected. Nobody can link a Singularity drop they have never seen.
💬 Chat says what happened
The event feed now reads like an MMO's, and every name in it is a link you can hover, click or pass on.
- You receive item: on loot and purchases. Picking something up used to be silent — you could cross a wreck field and have no record of what you had collected.
- Quest complete: with the reward items linked. Finishing a quest raised no chat event at all before.
- Contract complete: , and the reward that used to read 1 x Legendary Armour Upgrade Module as dead text is now something you can actually inspect.
- has been added to your Scrapbook when you file one.
- Achievement earned: , with fifteen new collection achievements to chase.
Resource pickups are gathered into one line rather than one per node, so mining a deposit field reports what you got instead of burying the channel.
🛠️ Fixes
- The second actionbar is back in the open world. Playing a single Blitz match wrote its one-bar layout into a setting the open world then restored forever after. Blitz keeps its own now, and the open world repairs the value that was already saved.
- Buying several things in a row works. An item id that the economy would not accept made every save for that pilot fail, which stalled everything queued behind it — not just purchases.
- Logging in tells you what went wrong. A login that cannot reach Steam now says so, and says what to do about it, instead of dropping you with "lost connection" and no reason.
- Special charges remember their tier. A Legendary Repel and a Common one were the same three charges before; they now keep the rarity they were picked up at, and show it.
- Applying audio settings starts the music. Turning the volume up did nothing audible when nothing was playing — the setting looked broken while it was only pointed at silence.
- Settings checkboxes stop starting ticked. Every box the Settings window built came up on before its real value was loaded.
