Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Complete Edition - What's New

Hey folks,

Below, we have a comprehensive overview of the changes included in Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Complete Edition. These changes, additions and fixes apply only to the Complete Edition, as we know it is vital that the original Shogun 2 build remains accessible as it currently exists. We have not listed changes here to the Assembly Kit and Mod Infrastructure, as that will be detailed in a separate post.

If you want to see many of these improvements in action, check out our Game Overview Trailer here:

Engine/UI Improvements

  • 1440p and 4K UI scaling. To ensure this scaling was of a high quality, most of the game’s UI has been reskinned. UI scale can be set to allow for customisation on all monitor sizes, and to scale properly on largely monitors.
  • New Fullscreen borderless mode, alongside an option to dictate which window the game plays on and the option to pause the game when in borderless mode if your mouse moves out of the window.
  • 64-bit upgrade. This thorough tech rewrite allows the game to be used more optimally by modern PC architecture. This should result in a more stable experience across the board.
  • New options to set the max camera height for land and naval battles. At maximum, these allow for a much higher camera height.

Graphical/Texture Improvements

We have made a swathe of updates across the board to the textures/models in Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Complete Edition. Alongside this, the underlying graphics technology has been brought to modern standards to take advantage of new methods of rendering.

  • Toggleable new 2.5D movie style inspired by Japanese Ukiyo-e art. These are used for intro movies, victory and defeat movies, and agent movies. These may be swapped back to the original versions in the ‘User Interface’ tab.
  • Improved rendering tech, imported from Three Kingdoms/Warhammer 3
  • Improved anti-aliasing tech, with additions such as DLSSSR and AMD FSR 3.1
  • Improved shadows, lighting, fog and skyboxes. This includes the addition of transitional lighting and cloud movement when seasons change on the campaign map.
  • Updated 2D parchment maps in campaign. This includes the addition of stylised markers to show the locations of strategic resources.
  • Updated campaign environment textures for vegetation, ground, buildings, mountains and water.
  • Updated battle textures (and in some cases, models) for units, ships and buildings.
  • Updated terrain normal maps in battles – this includes things like ground textures, grass, dirt and roads. Alongside this, vegetation/rocks were updated.
  • Updated radar/loading screen maps to match style of historical battles.
  • Updated unit recruitment movies using the updated graphics.

Gameplay Additions

Realm Divide

  • Added a new slider for the Realm Divide. This allows you to play the original intent, to ramp up the difficulty, or to turn off the mechanic entirely.

Minor Factions

  • Thanks to those modders over the years who helped players unlock the minor clans for themselves. We’ve added official support for many of these clans, and you’ll find 50+ minor factions now playable. We have included a full list of these at the bottom of the blog.

Quick Deal has been added to diplomacy

  • This lets you see how likely factions are to do each type of deal with you, selecting a diplomacy deal and then a faction will take you to negotiations with them for that deal.

Modernised Controls

  • We’ve implemented the modern controls that Total War players have grown accustomed to and allow for greater control over your forces in battle. This includes:
  • Alt + Left Click drag can be used to move units around
  • Ctrl + Alt + Left Click drag can be used to rotate units
  • It is now possible to create single unit groups.
  • The arrow keys can be pressed and held to move the selected units in those directions.
  • Other default hot keys now match more recent Total War games. Keyboard controls remain customisable, with the ability to save/load key sets.

  • We’ve added in another battle-map perspective, activated by scrolling, or pressing the relevant button.
  • This level of zoom allows you to see the entire map, and get an immediate snapshot of the state of the battle.

Quality-of-life

  • Colour adjustment options have been added that change UI and other element colours. It includes presets for Deuteranopia, Protanopia, Tritanopia, as well a custom option for setting whatever values you may prefer.
  • Voice language can be set separately from the text display language
  • Custom battles now have an auto-army button that generates an army for you

  • In the pre-battle screen, the auto-save pop-up now auto closes, rather than requiring a click to close

  • Full localisation for Japanese and Chinese. This includes the ability to set voice language separately from game language, for those who wish to play with Japanese audio.
  • Text localisation for Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Latin American Spanish
