Keine's Terakoya: Full Release Out Now — Early Access Has Graduated

Hello, teachers.

Keine's Terakoya leaves Early Access today. The full release (1.0.0) is out now.

What kind of game is this?

A Touhou Project fan game about running a small schoolhouse. You play as Kamishirasawa Keine and run a terakoya in Gensokyo.

  • Scheduling: place courses into the week's timetable. Three of a kind in a line make a Combo, and your layout decides what the week achieves.
  • Special Courses, Items and Teaching Aids: characters from across Gensokyo step in to teach, and items and Teaching Aids change the rules of scheduling.
  • Weekend Visits and Bonds: visit each region, handle events and get to know its people to earn Influence, requests and rewards.
  • Upgrade Projects: a tree that strengthens your terakoya. Its branches lean toward tradition or reform, and many projects are tied to the story.
  • Story: a fountain pen that came to Keine by chance turns "how to teach" into a question for all of Gensokyo.

What's new in the full release (since 0.8.0)

Complete content

  • The main story is complete, including the Final Chapter challenge.
  • Stories and tasks for every region, at every level, are complete.
  • Student Gifts and NPC affinity rewards are complete for every level.

Deeper gameplay

  • 7 new Upgrade Projects and a large number of new items. They do more than raise numbers: they add new mechanics and rules, and scheduling has more depth.

Polish

  • More than a hundred changes and improvements to controls and display.
  • The way recruitment brochures are handed out has been adjusted so that running the school goes more smoothly.

English and Japanese

  • The English and Japanese versions received many adjustments. A large number of missing translations and misaligned text have been fixed.

Two things to note

Price: with Early Access over, the base price has gone up. Steam does not allow discounts for a period after a price change, so there is no launch discount this time. We plan to offer a discount in an upcoming sale, possibly the Winter Sale, that brings the price back in line with the Early Access price.

Save data: this update touches every part of the game. We recommend starting a new save for the full release.

The road here

We released the demo last summer. Early Access began last October. Today the game is complete.

In the demo, much of the interface was still rough, the story was about half of what it is now, and the gameplay was simple. Over the past year we filled it in version by version: new chapters, new regions, new mechanics, and more small fixes than we can count.

We got here because of everyone who bought the game during Early Access, wrote a review, reported a bug or sent a suggestion. Thank you for staying with a schoolhouse that was still being built.

We said we would finish it, and now it is finished. If you run into problems after release, please keep telling us in the discussions and we will follow up.

Class is in session. Welcome back.
