Community Crunch 527: Trial by Fury

Most Survivors know better than to pick a fight with a Giganotosaurus. With its TLC on the way, the bravest among you may have to do exactly that.

We've already shared a first look at the Giga's renewed ferocity, but this week, we're unveiling its updated dossier, and it turns out earning the loyalty of this apex predator will be a challenge worthy of its reputation.

Forget simply finding a safe vantage point and stocking up on tranquilizers. Getting a Giga's attention will mean proving yourself against some of the ARKs' fiercest threats. And once you've caught its eye, you'll have to survive a confrontation where pushing the beast to its limits is just as vital as knowing your own.

Those who manage to overcome that challenge will earn themselves a formidable ally with a force capable of rallying an entire tribe into battle. Just remember that there's a fine line between fighting alongside an enraged Giga and standing in its way.

Somehow, this monster's gotten even scarier since I first saw one sink its teeth into a giant ape. Wounding a Giganotosaurus drives it into a berserker rage, and it only becomes tougher to beat the worse it gets hurt. Now, though, it seems to be able to share a measure of its fighting fury with allies in the heat of battle... provided they can stay out of its warpath.

You should be aware that the Giga has new ways of dealing with anyone or anything that manages to dodge its gnashing jaws. It will stomp its feet and slam its tail down hard to smash and scatter attackers at its rear or underfoot.

Breaking one of these behemoths won't be easy. Even if you can get a Giga's attention by killing alpha-level threats, you'll still have an omega-level fight to survive. Let the Giga exhaust itself attacking you, then fight back to provoke its rage. Hang in there long enough to wear the enraged Giga down, and you might just be able to subdue it.

It's more than worth the mortal danger to win this war-beast to your cause. Just aim your Giga at the adversary, and jump clear as its terrible rage flares up. Keep a safe distance, and you'll feel its gigantic ferocity embolden you & your allies to tear through enemy forces together!

Getting ASA running more smoothly is a big part of the 5.8 upgrade, and there’s more on the way for you to try out.

One thing to note is that the current PTR build doesn’t yet include Nanite Voxel Culling and Lumen Lite, the two optimizations showing the biggest GPU performance gains in our internal testing. We’re aiming to add both in an update early next week.

Ahead of that update, our Principal Engineer, Evan, takes us under the hood for a closer look at how they work:

Nanite Voxels

Nearly all foliage in ASA is rendered with Nanite, the UE system that reduces triangle counts selectively on objects as you move farther away from them. This works great for solid, mostly-immovable structures, but one thing it's particularly not great at is foliage: when you have thousands of small, disconnected pieces all overlapping with each other, that becomes a rather expensive calculation, and simplifying the geometry ends up making foliage look sparse and unnatural at distance.

With our move to UE 5.8, we can now take advantage of a new way to represent foliage using Nanite: voxels (volumetric pixels). When a cluster of foliage could be better represented by a volume rather than as individual triangles (like the aforementioned case when you're far away), it gets swapped for an approximation composed of roughly pixel-sized voxels that still generally represent the same properties and animation of the original. This is much cheaper for the GPU to compute and results in better looking foliage at distance that performs even better.

Our intention is to have Nanite voxel culling enabled on all platforms and while using all performance/graphics configurations, so everyone should see measurable benefit from this change.

Lumen Lite

Lumen is the UE system that we use to produce dynamic bounce lighting that can react to environmental changes. The full version computes this using a large set of probes that raytrace from visible surfaces every frame and then blend the results across frames. It looks awesome and allows for a much richer level of environmental detail, but it's one of the most expensive parts of how frames get drawn.

Lumen Lite is a new approach to doing those probes in UE 5.8. Instead of raytracing from probes spread across the entire screen every frame, it distributes a number of probes on a grid around the camera, traces from each of these points (distributed over a number of frames), and then individual pixels pull their lighting from the probes closest to them. Again, this is way cheaper of a calculation to do, but still keeps Lumen's fully dynamic and responsive lighting while sacrificing a bit of fine detail for an impactful performance gain. This will see the most gains on consoles, lower-end PC hardware, and while playing on lower graphics presets.

We're testing these new systems extremely thoroughly and tweaking parameters internally to ensure we maintain visual fidelity and get the most performance benefit possible, which is why we held off on including them in this first PTR build.

Hey Survivors, after careful assessment, we've opted to begin the process of sunsetting a selection of our inactive official servers. Our goal is to ensure that we're always delivering the best experience possible, and official servers exist as a way for the community to play together without having to host their own. When we launch fresh content, typically, we put up more servers than we need in the long term to match the peak in user capacity; over time, these servers become ghost towns as players have dropped off and are waiting for the next major content release.

As part of this process, the servers will be renamed with the “SUNSET” prefix, following the same approach we’ve used in the past. Please note that once renamed, these servers will be removed from the in-game Favorites list, so you’ll need to search for them manually to reconnect.

On November 29th, we'll be sunsetting these inactive Island servers, click on Show More to see the updated detailed list.

Conquest, introduced to ARK: Survival Ascended by Snail Games, focuses on large-scale PvP, with increased rates, and other changes listed below. The increased rates will allow tribes to set up and establish themselves quickly and enable them to rebuild after potential losses instead of being wiped completely.

The official Conquest servers are open for PC, Xbox and PlayStation.

Big things are in the works for Conquest! The team has started working on a revamp of the mode, and we're turning to the players who know it best to help guide future seasons.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be releasing a series of questionnaires in the Conquest Discord covering what's working, what isn't, and what you'd like to see next. The team will review every response, and your answers will play a direct role in where Conquest goes from here.
